March Month of Women in the Arts 2020

In March 2020, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, MASS MoCA’s artist residency, The Studios at MASS MoCA, alongside other organizations and private galleries that occupy Building 13 on the MASS MoCA campus, are committing the month to featuring only women-identifying artists in their exhibitions and residency program. 15 artists will be in residence at the Studios at MASS MoCA, including: Sookoon Ang (Paris, France); Miranda Blennerhassett (Dublin, Ireland); Yuchen Chang (Brooklyn, NY) Alexis Day (Portland, OR); Insoon Ha (Toronto, Canada); Rhiannon Inman-Simpson (Bergen, Norway); Sun Woo Jung (Jersey City, New Jersey); Woo Jae Lim (Highland Park, MI) Irene Mamiye (New York, NY); Monica Mazzone (Milan, Italy); Caitlin McDonagh (Montréal, Québec); Sarah Valeri (Brooklyn, NY); Ella Weber (Bennington, NE); Siru Wen (Los Angeles, CA); and Etty Yaniv (Alpine, NJ).

Visitors are invited to meet twelve of these sixteen artists during Open Studios at MASS MoCA on Friday, March 20 5:30 – 8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public and will happen concurrently with gallery openings and events throughout MASS MoCA’s Building 13, including at CYNTHIA-REEVES, Ferrin Contemporary, and the Artist Book Foundation. We at the Studios at MASS MoCA also want to recognize that women’s enfranchisement in the U.S. was a slow process, and that 1920 only, truly, marked the beginning of suffrage. Native peoples of all genders did not receive citizenship and the vote until 1924, and racial discrimination in voting wasn’t directly outlawed until the Voting Rights Act of 1965, yet remains an issue throughout the country.

We are incredibly grateful to the Barbara Lee Family Foundation for supporting The Studios at MASS MoCA portion of this month’s programming.
