The Studios at MASS MoCA Residency Program

Since October 2015, The Studios at MASS MoCA have hosted over 700 artists and writers for residencies of up to 8 weeks.

About the Studios at MASS MoCA

The Studios is MASS MoCA’s artist residency program situated within the museum’s factory campus, and surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Operated by MASS MoCA’s program Assets for Artists, the residency runs year-round and hosts up to 12 artists at a time. Artists can apply for stays of 1-8 weeks, though most offered stays are 2-5 weeks.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER 2020 RESIDENCY SESSION.

Session runs: April 22, 2020 - October 6, 2020

Apply now for residencies up to 8 weeks. Learn more about the program, facilities and financial aid below and to the right. When you are ready, submit your application through Submittable using the link to the right. —>

Deadline: January 8, 2020

Need more time to plan? We now have an EARLY APPLICATION option for the Studios on our Submittable page. Apply early for the Fall/Winter 2020-2021 residency period of Oct 7, 2020 - March 30, 2021 and receive notice a full season ahead, around April 1, 2020. Artists applying with this application will NOT be considered for MASS MoCA's financial aid, so you should only use this particular application if you need the longer lead time to position yourself for other institutional support to fund your residency. The application deadline remains the same as the Spring/Summer 2020 residency.

At the Studios at MASS MoCA, selected artists receive:

  • Private, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA, available 24/7.

  • Housing (private bedroom/queen bed, shared kitchen, and bath) in newly renovated apartments directly across the street from the museum.

  • One communal meal per day in the company of fellow artists-in-residence.

  • MASS MoCA member benefits for the duration of the residency, including free access to the museum’s galleries, The Clark, and discounts on performing arts events and museum store purchases.

  • Optional one-on-one artist-focused financial and business counseling through the Assets for Artists mentorship program.

The full-price residency fee is $650/week, but many participants are offered both merit- and need-based financial aid.

ARTIST SELECTION

Quality of the work sample is the primary consideration for selection. Residents are selected by a rotating jury and typically include at least one MASS MoCA curator. The curatorial jury is not announced in advance, but you can peruse our jury from the previous year on our Curatorial Jury page. Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications we receive each season, we are not able to give feedback to individual applicants either before or after the selection process.

Here’s what artists are saying about their residency experience in the Studios:

Hospitality and administrative efforts were exceptional! I feel that the administrative team’s generosity, depth, and kindness set the tone for a culture that carried over to the residents.
— Brian Gillis, Eugene, OR
I was very impressed with how the residency was managed. Responses to questions were always prompt and friendly. This was so valuable to me, especially traveling from a long distance. I was able to really look forward to and enjoy the whole experience because of how well the residency details were managed.
— Jessica Bell, Vancouver
My residency at The Studios at MASS MoCA was a very special time of exploration, learning, stimulation, and fun. You have an unbeatable combination there: good studio space, nice accommodations, great location, congenial number and mix of artists, gracious staff, and the unusual bonus of the visual resources of the world-class exhibitions of MASS MoCA right there. A fantastic mix.
— Linda Stillman, New York
