Our North Adams Project offers funding and professional development for the growing artist community in North Adams, and for artists looking to set down creative roots in our great little city. It's about celebrating and supporting our hometown.

Since the North Adams Project began in 2014, we’ve provided $180,000 in grants and even more in free professional development support to 70 local artists. And we’re only getting started! This past year we welcomed ten new artists into our North Adams Project cohort and hosted nine free artist-focused financial & business workshops attended by over one hundred area artists.

We understand that over half of the creative jobs in Berkshire County are self-employed artists or sole proprietorships, and we’re keeping them networked. A4A facilitates peer groups for North Adams Project alums and is a member of the Northern Berkshire Artist Group, which organizes quarterly meet-ups open to every artist in the area.  Perhaps we’re a little biased, but if you ask us, there’s no rural community stronger and more supportive of artists and the arts.

Interested in applying to become part of the North Adams Project? Our applications for the 2019-2020 cohort are currently closed, but join our mailing list to keep up-to-date on our next season of free workshops and next year’s NA Project application.

North Adams Project artists benefit
from the following opportunities:

  • 1:1 “matched savings” grant that serves as working capital to be invested in the artist’s creative practice.

  • Two free professional development workshops: a dynamic “bootcamp” on personal finance and an artist-tailored career planning workshop.

  • One-on-one business/financial coaching, including support in writing a business plan to guide the use of the artist’s matched savings grant.

Select "re-locator" artists (those not previously located in North Adams) also receive:

  • A $500 relocation grant to provide additional assistance with the cost of moving to North Adams.

  • Free 1-year membership to MASS MoCA.

The North Adams Project is open artists in all disciplines who live in North Adams, maintain a studio in North Adams, or have plans to move to North Adams by the end of the grant year.

There's never been a better time to make the move.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Berkshires, North Adams is an amazing little city full of creative energy. With world class institutions like MASS MoCA, the Clark Art Institute, and the Williams College Museum of Art all nearby, there is never a shortage of cultural happenings, and the beautiful outdoor setting puts art and nature side by side. North Adams' affordable real estate makes it possible for creative entrepreneurs to launch gallery projects such as OutsideGravity Gallery, and Ferrin Contemporary, and artist residencies such as 36 Chase & Barns Residency and the Studios at MASS MoCA. And grassroots community art centers like the Common Folk Artist Collective offer plenty of opportunities to get involved and make your mark.
